    What coolant should i use?

This can go down an opinon path quick. Some will fight to the death about DexCool either for or against. I will say that the 5 year 150,000 mile is streching it but still. If you GM car is all GM I mean original parts then keep it with the Dex Cool. You should flush or change out the coolant every 3 years. Its cheap insurance. Now the reasons to do this is coolant dose break down. It looses its lubrication properites and protective properties. It will become acidic and start to eat the motor from the inside. Its not a fast thing but it can and will happen. It likes head gasket meterial.

Some early signes that you need to change fluid. It smells like fish, or viniger. Its dirty, the overflow tank has residue in it. Oily or looks like mud.

Some other things to think about. Not common on GM cars but have seen it too often on Euro cars. Play along, needs water pump change pump and fill it with Universal coolant. (Factory stuff is $25 a gallon). Two weeks later the upper rad hose blows out. No biggie it was old anyway. Add more universal and a few weeks later its the heater hose Again no biggie more universal. Then the plastic radiator bursts. Now your pissed. Well the issue is the factory coolant soaks into these parts. Some of the aftermarket coolants react with the factory stuff and weakens the rubber or plastic. Now you chase blown out parts, thinking its just old. Other issuses are heater cores, some are the same makeup as the new plastic aluminum rads. In short new car heater cores can but several hundered dollars to replace. So even it your not a do it yourselfer, make sure your mechanic is not cutting corners. Lower price can be costly.

I did say not common in GM cars but if someone removed the Dexcool and installed a green or universal some others mae react in the same manner.

Very true.. I told my father in law (god rest his soul) that his Honda was so bad you could see white acid forming on the outside of the gasket surfaces.. Car was not that old at the time and he shrugged it off thinking Honda was taking care of it.. Still to this day I have no clue what it was laced with but ended up passing the car down to his granddaughter some years later and eventually had to scrap it cause it ate a hole in the rear of the block.. I just don't why some people don't listen thinking they know it all when all your trying to do is save them.. Must be a pride thing..

Anyway.. totally agree how important coolant is while ensuring the right type, not mixing and changing frequently.. It's cheap why not??

    Good write up.. thanks..

GM did change its stand on water. It used to be distilled water and dexcool at a 50/50 mix. Now they say any potable water is good. Seen this too remember to use the correct mix when topping off an overflow tank. Straight water or weak mix will freeeze. Not so much here but can happen. Also change rad cap when doing a flush or anytime you might have overheated. Its a huge part of the cooling system.
